'if i were an animal i would be...' series
pencil, biro, ink and gouache on paper
2009
just like most little girls i would spend my days playing make believe in the backyard. along with my sister and our neighbours, we would pretend to be different animals, often the yellow canaries that our grandfather kept in the aviary or a deer like those we read about in bambi!
despite being without masks or costumes our characters were very real and alive to us. i wanted to illustrate the simplicity and creativity of the imaginary worlds that are still etched into my idealised memories of childhood.
